Information about Lake Victoria
and its cichlids

From aquaristic point of view, Lake Victoria cichlids hardly play a role. They are unknown to us. There is also little literature about them. And since there are hardly any imports, this will remain the case in the future.

The fact that some of these species have found their way into our aquariums is due in particular to some scientists from the universities and research centers in Leiden / NL, Hull / GB and Kastanienbaum / CH. These universities have been dealing with the Victoria Lake ecosystem for many years.

For research purposes, individual species of cichlids from the lake were brought to the institutes and used in scientific investigations. Animals and their offspring, which were no longer needed, have been made available to interested aquarists, which must be thanked at this point once.
Thus, out of the many hundred species from the lake, about eighty species have found their way to us, and of these about sixty species are still detectable, albeit only in minimal numbers. Victoriasee cichlid owners maintain a loose and trans-national contact between each other to exchange species, stabilize strains and prevent species from disappearing from European aquariums.
